The winery that put the DO El Bierzo name on the map, Bodegas Castro Ventosa is the producer of Valtuille Cepas Centenarias, formerly known as Valtuille Cepas Viejas.
This remarkable Spanish red wine is made basically from Mencía, with a touch of Alicante Bouschet (aka Garnacha Tintorera) and a droplet of Bastardo (aka Merenzao and Trousseau) and other red varieties. Grown in sandy-limestone soils, most of the vines are over 50 years old.
The grapes were hand harvested and meticulously vinified by the one and only Raúl Pérez. After macerating for a long time, they were fermented and aged for 11 months in French oak barrels.
Bottled unfiltered, Valtuille Cepas Viejas 2020 was aged for a further months in the cellar prior to its commercial release.
Decant this red wine from El Bierzo 1 hour before drinking.
If properly stored, this Crianza red wine will improve considerably over the next years.
