The red wine Purgatori originates in a historic 200-hectare estate planted with organically farmed vineyards called finca L’Aranyó.
Located in a desolate, remote area with a very harsh climate in DO Costers del Segre, the estate dates from 1770, when the benedictine abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat ordered the construction of a secondary building far from the main abbey. There, the unruly monks were sent to purge their sins working the unforgiving land.
Produced by bodega Torres, this Spanish red wine is made from Grenache and Carignan vines planted at three different altitudes and grown in very poor and deep soils. The area has a tough Continental climate with extreme temperature differences between daytime and nighttime, which ensure optimal levels of natural acidity and a slow, steady ripening of the grapes.
Hand-picked and selected meticulously, the grapes were macerated for 7-10 days before fermenting in concrete diposits and stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature. The malolactic fermentation of this Crianza red wine was carried out in oak barrels.
Finally, the red wine Purgatori 2020 was aged in French oak barrels from Nevers, 30% new, for a period of 15-18 months.
Aerate this red wine from Costers del Segre 1 hour before drinking.
Pair with hearty meat recipes.
