Produced by world-famous winemaker Raúl Pérez in collaboration with rising star oenologist César Márquez (who is also Mr. Pérez’s nephew), El Rapolao, one of the bottlings of the La Vizcaína collection, is a critically acclaimed Spanish red wine from El Bierzo.
A blend of Mencía, Bastardo (aka Merenzao and Trousseau) and Garnacha tintorera (aka Alicante Bouschet), the grapes come solely from El Rapolao, a north-oriented «Premier Cru» vineyard with steep slopes planted with vines 40 to 100 years of age.
Picked by hand and meticulously selected, the whole bunches of grapes were spontaneously fermented in open oak vats. After macerating for about 30 days, this Crianza red wine was transferred into 225 and 500 French oak barrels, where it was aged for 12 months. After that, La Vizcaína El Rapolao 2021 was bottled unfined.
As terroir-bound as it gets, we suggest that you decant this Crianza red wine from El Bierzo some time before drinking.
