The Menade winery has just released the new vintage of La Misión de Menade – which, again, raises the bar for Verdejo wines.
This varietal Spanish white wine is made from centenary vineyards with exceptional characteristics. The berries they produce are smaller and have a thicker skin than the traditional Verdejo grapes. Thus, besides having a naturally higher concentration of phenolic compounds, they are more resistant to grape diseases such as botrytis.
Composed of sandy soils, the vineyards are farmed following the guidelines of organic agriculture.
After a meticulous harvest, the grapes were crushed with whole bunches. Alcoholic fermentation with indigenous yeasts began in 500-litre French oak barrels, and was completed in in 5,000, 10,000-litre oak vats and clay amphorae -interestingly, the clay is made from the same soil in which the vines are planted.
Once the process was completed, La Misión de Menade 2018 was aged for a period of 10 months.
Finally, this organic white wine from VT Castilla y León was aged for a minimum of 2 years before hitting the market.
This is a complex, profound Crianza white wine which goes well beyond the cliché of trivial, quaffable Verdejo.
Decant 30 minutes before drinking.
