This is a rather uncommon, hence very interesting Spanish red wine from the Basque Country, a land typically known for its white wines.
Produced by bodega Gorka Izagirre, Gorka Izagirre Ilun is a varietal Txakolí red wine made solely from the native red variety Hondarrabi Beltza – a variety which, interestingly, is closely related to Cab. Franc.
Sourced from a 1-hectare vineyard situated in the Bizkaia region and harvested by hand in mid October, the grapes were gently pressed and the vinified in stainless steel tanks.
Once fermentation was completed, Gorka Izagirre Ilun 2019 was aged for 6 months in the tanks before being bottled.
Utterly Atlantic and quite distinctive, this red Txakolí from Bizkaia will pair excellently with fish recipes, cold cuts and white meat.
Only 4,317 bottles produced.
