The top-shelf Spanish red wine of Bodegas Lan, Culmen Reserva is made from a traditional blend of mostly Tempranillo and a small amount of Graciano.
The grapes are sourced from low-yielding bushvines over 60 years old, the oldest of the Bodegas Lan estate. They are planted in Pago El Rincón, a gently sloped vineyard with cobble soils at 490 metres of altitude.
The 2017 vintage of this Reserva red wine was defined by a severe spring and summer drought which tested the resistance of the plants. Fortunately, some timely rains in late August allowed the vines to complete the ripening cycle. The grapes were harvested in September 16 and 17, 2017.
Once in the cellar, the grapes were selected on a sorting table and fermented in small truncated cone-shaped stainless steel tanks under controlled temperature.
After that, the red wine Culmen Reserva 2017 went through malolactic fermentation in extra fine-grained Allier and Tronçais French oak barrels, where it was subsequently aged for 25 months.
Finally, this red wine from La Rioja was bottled and aged for another 22 months before being released onto the market.
Pair with game recipes, roasts, casseroles and cured cheese.
Decant 1 hour before drinking, at the very least.
