This is the new vintage of Clos Mogador. A wine that would be in any «100 wines you must try before you die» list worthy of that name.
This already legendary Spanish red wine bears the label «Vi de Finca Qualificada» (meaning single vineyard wine), the highest official quality distinction granted in Catalonia.
The wine is crafted by the great René Barbier, one of the pioneers who brought Priorat back to life almost three decades ago.
Uncompromising and terroir-oriented, this Reserva red wine is a blend of 45% Grenache, 29% Carignan, 16% Syrah and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes come from the 20 hectares of vineyards owned by the Clos Mogador winery. They are located at an average altitude of 350 metres above sea level, on a natural amphitheatre made of the slate, llicorella soil that gives the wine its trademark, one-of-a-kind Priorat minerality.
Harvested at an optimal ripening state, the grapes were vinified with 30% stems and first went through a 35 to 65-day skin maceration. Then Clos Mogador 2020 was fermented with native yeasts in a 2,000-litre oak vat, after which it was aged for 18 months. It was bottled the 2nd week of July 2022.
If there is a wine that requires patience and deserves attention, this is it. So, we emphatically suggest that you decant this red wine from Priorat wine for at least 2 hours before you drink it. Longer decantations will greatly improve the wine.
