Two features make Benquerido Mencía an exceedingly interesting Spanish red wine. First, the wine comes from DO Rías Baixas, mostly known for its Albariño wines. Second, it is made solely from Mencía, which is the flagship red variety of both DO Bierzo and DO Ribeira Sacra.
Produced by Casa Monte Pío, the grapes are sourced from vineyards 25 years old on average planted in soils of decomposed granite near the village of Ribadumia. The area has a maritime climate, with hot summers and high levels of humidity.
Hand-harvested and carefully selected, the grapes were destemmed and drawn-off by gravity. Then this red wine from Rías Baixas was fermented in stainless steel tanks.
After that, Casa Monte Pío Benquerido Mencía 2019 was aged in French oak barrels for 9 months.
Finally, this Crianza red wine was bottled and aged for a further months before its market release.
This is a seductive small-production red wine from Galicia.
