Produced by Can Sumoi, Can Sumoi Sumoll Garnatxa is a very interesting Spanish red wine made from an unashamedly indigenous blend of traditional Penedès varieties.
Made from an equal combination of Sumoll and Grenache, the grapes are sorted from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards with rocky, clay and limestone soils sitting at 600 metres of altitude, in one of Penedès’ highest points.
The grapes were harvested during September. Destemmed and foot-trodden in an inert atmosphere, they fermented spontaneously in stainless steel tanks with native yeasts for a period of 15 days. After that, this wine of Pepe Raventós-the scion of one of Catalonia’s oldest wine families-was kept in the tanks for 12 months.
Finally, Can Sumoi Sumoll Garnatxa 2021 was bottled and aged for a further 6 months before hitting the market.
