A dry Spanish white wine from Bodegas H. Calvente, Calvente is one of the few Spanish wines listed in the prestigious «1001 Wines You Must Try Before You Die» guide, written by Neil Beckett.
This remarkable high-altitude wine is made from Moscatel de Alejandría in Sierra del Chaparral, Granada, a mountain range located between Sierra Nevada and the Mediterranean coast. The 50 to 120-year old vines are grown on steep slopes and scattered over several estates, totalizing 14.5 hectares.
Located at altitudes between 750 and 1,025 metres above sea level, the region has a continental microclimate with Mediterranean influences that allow for a slow, steady ripening of the grapes and yields exceptional results.
Harvested at dawn a little earlier than usual, the handpicked grapes were brought to the cellar in small, 15 kg. boxes. Fermented in stainless steel tanks under strict temperature control, Calvente 2021 was then aged on its lees for some months. Finally, it was filtered before bottling.
This varietal white wine aged on lees is yummy and characterful.
