A true rarity, Algueira Serradello is a varietal Spanish red wine from bodega Adega Algueira made solely from Brancellao. This is a largely forgotten variety indigenous to Ribeira Sacra, whose cultivation was almost abandoned after the phylloxera epidemic.
The grapes come from scenic vineyards located on the banks of the Sil river, with steep slopes up to 80%. Vines are 30 years old on average, and climate is Mediterranean with an Atlantic influence.
Hand-harvested at dusk, the grapes were selected on site and placed whole bunch in 600-litre used French oak barres. Then they were stomped to kickstart the fermentation process, which was carried out using only the native yeasts of the grapes. After that, Algueira Serradello 2016 underwent a low-temperature post-fermentation maceration. Finally, the wine was aged for 12 months in the barrels before bottling.
Since it opens quite tight, be sure to decant this red wine from Ribeira Sacra at least 30 minutes before drinking, preferably more.
Pair this Crianza red wine with white meat dishes, oily fish recipes, Indian cuisine and cold cuts.
