This is the new vintage of Algueira Risco Merenzao, the rarest of the varietal wines produced by Adega Algueira.
This exquisite Spanish red wine is made solely from Merenzao – aka Bastardo, María Ordoña and Trousseau – a variety native to the Jura region of France.
The grapes come from estate vineyards located on the steep slopes of the Sil river, in DO Ribeira Sacra. South-oriented, the vines receive a lot of sunlight. Climate is Mediterranean with an Atlantic influence.
Hand-harvested at dawn, the grapes were selected and stomped whole bunch. After that, they were cold-macerated in stainless steel tanks and oak barrels for some hours. Then Algueira Risco Merenzao 2019 was fermented, blended and subsequently transferred into 225-litre French oak barrels, where it was aged for 6 months.
Finally, this red wine from Ribeira Sacra was bottled and aged for a further months before being released onto the market.
Aerate at least 30 minutes before drinking.
Although you can pair it with almost any dish you fancy, this wine is so elegant and subtle that we recommend enjoying it without food.
